Hotels and Hypoallergenic Rooms

The hospitality industry has grown to accommodate patron needs over time, and hypoallergenic rooms can be extremely desirable to those with strong reactions to dust, pollen, and other allergens. Many hypoallergenic rooms require thorough cleanings, air filtration, or frequent replacement of bedding.

  • Air filters can remove particulates from the air, but do not remove allergens from surfaces

  • Hypoallergenic standards for surface sanitizing requires laborious application of chemicals on many surfaces

  • Bedding, chairs, and even carpeting can retain allergens even after traditional cleaning methods. Since there is no agency mandating the replacement of bedding or furniture, allergens can accumulate over time

  • Odors from smoking can linger in a room despite thorough cleanings

"For those with allergies, a hotel room can trigger a swarm of reactions, said Philip Tierno Jr., director of clinical microbiology and immunology at New York University.

But before someone with allergies pays extra for a hypoallergenic room, they should see exactly what the hotels are offering, said Stanley Fineman, president-elect of the American College of Allergy, Asthma & Immunology, and allergist with the Atlanta Allergy & Asthma Clinic.

"I have patients who complain about the reactions they get from sleeping in some hotel rooms, so for some people with allergies, it may be worth it to pay the premium to sleep in a room that's prepared that way," Fineman said."
